College athlete charged with DWI in Arkansas

When residents are arrested for driving while intoxicated, the consequences can go beyond jail time, fines, lost driving privileges and other basic penalties. A DWI puts educational and career opportunities at risk, which is why it is imperative to craft a strong defense. A law firm that has experience in DWI cases is critical toward this end.

For example, an athlete for the University of Arkansas was arrested for DWI. The athlete, a competitor in track and field, who reached All-American status five times was stopped in the early morning hours shortly after 3 a.m. Law enforcement stated that he violated several traffic laws, serving as the catalyst for the stop. The student-athlete, 21, was found to be driving with an expired driver's license and did not have proof of insurance, and he was cited for careless driving.

The officer said the driver smelled of alcohol and had eyes that were watery and red. When his blood-alcohol concentration was tested, it registered .11. This is higher than the legal limit of .08.

Being convicted of a first DWI offense can result in a year in jail, a fine of $1,000 and a driver's license suspension for six months. Subsequent offenses can make the charges worse. This is before considering the possibility that a conviction can negatively affect a person's life.

Many are under the impression that there is no defense for DWI charges. While it can be difficult, it is not impossible. There could have been issues with the test, the traffic stop could have been flawed, the officer might have violated protocol or other factors can help the defense.

In this case, a noted track and field athlete was arrested for DWI. Since he has so much to lose with a conviction, he must protect his interests by contacting a qualified attorney with experience in helping those who are facing DWI charges.
